+TV4E: Interactive Television as a support to information broadcast about social services for seniors

Authors:

Telmo Silva, Jorge Abreu, Pedro Almeida, Maria João Antunes and Valter Silva

Abstract: The ageing is a global phenomenon that in the last decades has led to a significant inversion of the ageing pyramid in the developed societies. This fact has been introducing deep changes in societies and leading to pay more and more attention to the seniors’ concerns and needs. This framework has led to the appearance of multiple gerontechnologies (technologies that will meet the expectations and needs of people who are ageing in their "natural environment"). Many of these technologies intend to increase the feeling of belonging to a community, enlarge the social networks and improve the well-being and literacy levels and television has an interest potential in this purpose. It had a great impact in societies and has been one of the main agents of socialisation, being an enhancer of information and talks about television subjects. In addition, and because the television is the nearest technology for elderly, it can be an important technology supporter, to serve this population segment through features such as distance helping, the support of services that promote social interaction on the collective viewing, the provision of medical information or, as is the goal of this proposal, the information dissemination on public services relating to society. Despite the important investments which the public administration has done in the dissemination of such services, it is mostly web-based, implying a "pulloriented" activity (from the user's perspective) unlike the "push-oriented" informative dynamic that most of the seniors are familiarised. Due to this fact elderly commonly are in a disadvantaged position, for not knowing how to access public services and assistances they can benefit from (e.g. medication discounts, medical appointments, etc.), thus, there is a high informational dependence on their caregivers? network. In that context, the target audience of this project is the Portuguese senior population and it consider their specific issues, needs and expectations in the use of public services, like the public social security and tax office, in order to develop an interactive television (iTV) platform which allows automatically the enrichment of television experience with the integration of contents about public and social services. For this platform, an interactive application (running in set-top boxes) will be designed, implemented and validated in order to enrich the television experience with personalised informative contents considering the user’s profile (age, geographic localisation, clinical condition, etc.). To exemplify the central idea of the project, imagine the scenario in which the incomes tax system changes (e.g. people over 66 years old become eligible for a discount by delivering a declaration). This information can be sent to seniors while they watch TV in the following way: a) on the TV content, in a graphical overlay, a warning appears stating that an informative content will shortly be presented; b) if the user does not cancel this content presentation, namely, if the user does not press a remote control key targeted to cancel the information content, it will appear replacing the television content for a few moments. This functional dynamics have some similarities with the Radio Data System (RDS) but with differences: i) in the support (in this case the TV set) and ii) by presents itself as a context awareness service since the informative contents are adjusted to the user?s profile and information needs. It is also intended to implement a cross-media approach, which allows senior users (more experts than their relatives) to get additional and more detailed contents, in addition to the displayed information on the TV set, through other devices (e.g. a tablet).

Authors:

Marco Duarte, Simone Pellegrini , Vitor Sousa, Mircea Marzan and Gil Gonçalves

Abstract: Older adults often extensive expertise, skills and time which sometimes they find it difficult exploit the best useful way. The core concept of TSBank is to support older adults find ways to use their time and skills in ways that are useful for the community, helping them to feel active and engaged, greatly contributing to their well-being. TSBank explores social innovation and links it with the emerging concept of the sharing economy. To this end, TSBank developed, validated and deployed an online platform - silverskills - that allows the older adult to volunteer their skills and time to perform work on a set of areas. People looking for support can then search the platform for a volunteer older adult that matches the sought needs and the platform puts both parties (demand and offer) in contact. The TSBank together with the innovative silverskills platform, address four main objectives: - Improve the quality of life of older adults by helping them to use their capabilities and time; - Support a more active role of older adults in society; - Offer an innovative matching service and a starting point for future similar services; and - Promote intercultural and intergenerational exchange of experiences. The platform is modular starting from three service areas: • Tourism: the tourism module will allow an older adult to volunteer to help tourists visiting his/her town. The degree of help is chosen by the older adults; • Pet Sitting: The pet sitting module will enable the older adult to volunteer to perform pet sitting work in their homes for people living nearby while they are out. • Consultancy: People often need to look for information of skills that are not easily available (e.g. a foreigner learning a new language could use the support of a native speaker to improve his/her skills). The consultancy module will put users in contact with older adult that possess the necessary skills and knowledge to help them, taking advantage of the valuable skills and expertise that may be lost to society and the labour market when the older adult retires. silverskills is also an entry for the older adults to gain expertise, confidence and acceptance in the use of ICT tools. Available in any device with a browser installed and connected to the internet, TSBank offers the following features with a great focus on usability and accessibility: 1. Brokerage Matching Platform – matching system between the older adults’ skills with the demand for services. 2. Chat for Interaction – enable the possibility for the users to meet and discuss before starting the service. 3. Notification alerts to inform the users about news or updates regarding services. 4. Easy to use with a clear interface. 5. Services for affordable prices. 6. Trustful rating system to award the users for their great effort during the service.

Fit4Work: Self-management of Physical and Mental Fitness of Older Workers

Authors:

Cezary Mazurek, Maciej Stroinski and Michal Kosiedowski

Abstract: The Fit4Work project developed an innovative and easy-to-use system that supports older workers in preventing negative impact of physical, mental and environmental stress resulting from their occupation. The system is based on ambient ways of monitoring physical and mental activities at work and beyond, using unobtrusive devices such as a smartphone, a wrist band and an all-in-one environment sensor device. Smart algorithms analyze the data collected with the use of these devices and provide context-sensitive personalized recommendations helping to achieve daily and weekly wellbeing goals. They are based on machine learning to estimate vital information such as the user’s expended energy or level of stress, and to automatically detect state of workplace facilities and predict changes of workplace environment. Recommendations for the user are provided through an intuitive user interface designed with the participation of end user representatives and enabled on smartphones. The applied technologies allow the Fit4Work system to support older adults in maintaining proper level of physical activity, reducing mental stress and improving workplace conditions.
